I do, and I always thought it would be so cool to have Telepathy. If we could understand what everyone else was thinking, would that not make life easier?

There would be no more guessing what your partner, family, coworkers thought. You just would know. It would improve understanding and make communication easier. Sounds like a good thing.

But, now I think there are a couple of really good, solid, and practical reasons we did not evolve to have telepathy: Self-preservation and our need for solitude.

Our self-preservation would be compromised If we knew exactly what other people were thinking. We would probably go insane if we had no way of shutting out another’s thoughts. Our own minds are crazy enough, so I would not also want to know everyone else’s thoughts. We would hear every stupid, hostile, and inane thought which would have us ending up in mortal strife with everyone. Look how poor communication creates problems already.

Solitude allows us to keep secrets, plan in private, mull things over, and ultimately find some semblance of peace. In many ways modern technology and the internet has given us almost telepathic abilities. We now have daily communication via cellulars and email where we are completely kept up to date with what everyone is doing. Thinking and doing is easily tracked thanks to Twitter and Facebook. While it can be fun, it is also painfully distracting.

All mystical traditions teach us that the only way to true happiness is through concentration and solitude. It is coming from a position of solitude that the preciousness of our relationships begin to matter. Being alone in our thoughts allows for spirituality, invention, artistic creation, and secrets. Not being able to read another’s thoughts is actually a blessing and has likely contributed to our survival as a species.

Unfortunately, I have just cursed you because you are reading what I am thinking via this blog post. Sorry about that. Good thing I don’t know what you’re thinking.

Today’s reading is from the Book of Corporate.  Section 1, Chapter 1, Verses 1-15

1. In the beginning was the Plan.
2. And then came the Assumptions.
3. And the Assumptions were without form.

How Many Social Workers Does It Take To Change a Lightbulb?

• The light bulb doesn’t need changing, it’s the system that needs to change.
• None. Social Workers never change anything.
• None. They empower it to change itself.
• None. The light bulb is not burnt out, it’s just differently lit.
• None. They set up a team to write a paper on coping with darkness.

The articles titled, Ponzi Squared, and Con of the Century, talk about how Madoff created fabricated investment returns by using new investor’s money to pay for older investors’ returns. Close to fifty billion dollars (thats $50,000,000,000.00, yikes!) was invested into what amounts to little more than a large pyramid scheme. Amazing.

Supposedly the people who invested with Madoff were sophisticated investors who never bothered to ask how Madoff made his money. Talk about stupid!

What does this prove? That some people are crooks? Yes, but it also proves that people are idiots. They are the authors of their own misfortune. The Buddha said over 2,500 year ago that “Life is Suffering”, meaning that no matter what we do, there is also going to be loss and difficulty in life. I would say that Scott Adams helped update the Buddha’s message with his pithy statement, “People Are Idiots”:

“… after careful analysis I have developed a sophisticated theory to explain the existence of this bizarre workplace behavior: People are idiots. Including me. Everyone is an idiot, not just the people with low SAT scores. The only differences among us is that we’re idiots about different things at different times.”

(Scott Adams, The Dilbert Principle, Page 2)

What I find most disturbing about the Madoff scam is that when it comes to money I would have thought that we would be more intelligent. In a place like North America where materialism and short-sighted thinking abounds, surely our most financially successful people would be more careful. Not!

People being idiots helps explain why the human species is in the trouble it is in. Adams’ perhaps less than noble truth, helps to tell us why life is so full of difficulty and waste.

We do it to ourselves because we simply don’t know better.

The basis of the western calendar comes from the Romans.

The calendar was then modified by Julius Caesar in 46 BCE.

And that calendar was further modified by Pope Gregory in 1582 CE.

Neither the Romans and Catholics can be considered to be historically sensitive to women which would explain why the calendar reflects a non-lunar, non-feminine cycle. Ironically, ignoring the women in the west has led to men being ritually pearl-harbored every month by the women in their lives.

Curse you Julius & Gregory! (shakes virtual fist).

If every month was shortened to 28 days, or basically a lunar cycle of four 7-day weeks, we would  have room for a 13th month.

Anyways, supposedly we have only four pieces of what were thousands of ‘books’ that talk about the cosmological system. It is like guessing the end of a book with only the first few pages. How can we be sure? Well, I guess pretending to be sure that the world will end in 2012 helps to sell lots of books

To demonstrate the absurdity about predicting the end of the world, I pledge to give $1,000 Canadian to the author/blogger who is closest to correctly predicting the end of the earth in 2012. After the world ends, and your date is the closest to the date the world ends, you can contact me and I will Paypal you the money. No gimmicks or trickery here. Not only will you have the money but the personal satisfaction in being right.

At first it does not seem funny because it hits so close to home. It really does force one to step outside of their assumptions and once you do, it becomes quite enjoyable.
