You're welcome. It does help to think of Genre as 'world-view' while thinking of tempo/mood as being the flavor/hue of the world-view/genre. The struggle I have is that lots of my albums are Greatest Hit compilations so sometimes an Artist will spread across multiple Genres as they travel their musical journey. So far, I am treating these albums as representing the original Genre the artist started with. So U2 Greatest Hits would be Rock: Alternative even though lots of the songs on their 6th and 7th albums flirted with Electronica. My rationale is that they are a Alternative Rock band first, and whatever they experiment with will be influenced by those roots.
It's still possible to Tag the songs in the Comments section with (Electronica) or (Dance) which will show up during searches, etc. This way I capture the distinct flavor of U2's Alternative Rock career during this period.

Hey, thanks. I have been planning on doing this kind of thing for a while now. I have been very hesitant though until after reading this. Now I know what I'll be doing all night. lol, but I always have had the problem of genres being too vague. Next though, I want to get all music sorted by dynamics, and tempo, as well as male or female singer, and by the mood the songs sets, like happy, sad. etc... But this is a good start, thanks for this post.

I'm pessimistic that there will ever be a cure for optimism. However, I'm optimistic that there will be a cure for pessimism. You're probably sceptical about both of these propositions.

Can't disagree with you that Monopoly has more strategy than the Game of Life, but that does not make it more fun. The Game of Life is actually more balanced and more competitive because everyone is on the same treadmill.

Monopoly is initially about pure luck, getting the right dice rolls to get you the properties you need to start trading. The trading aspect is where the strategy comes in. The problem is that because of the luck factor, some trades are likely to never happen. Between the trading and the lucky dice rolls, Monopoly becomes a boring game of grinding your opponent into dust.

My vote for one of the best board games ever is The Settlers of Catan.

Disagree!

In Monoploly, the goal is create a monopoly, not buying useless properties. If you keep enough money to buy a monopoly instead of random properties, the return is much greater.

The Game of Life is a pretty crappy game, there is absolutely no strategy.

Thanks for sharing. That is quite a contrast with the snarly, in-your-face punk bands from the late 1970s. The punks saw that everything was getting worse with such thinking. That cynical attitude has carried on with the various indie bands.

The Editors is easily one of my favorite bands to come out in the past five years. They have a bunch of great songs, but this one is particularly relevant:

"When Anger Shows"

How can you know what things are worth
If your hands wont move to do a days work?

This chorus summarizes how so many people expect something for nothing. We expect government to fix all of our problems, yet are surprised that we spent all this money and the problems remain.

In 1967 the Young Rascals sang "Let's Live for Today":

    Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
And don't worry 'bout tomorrow, hey, hey, hey

That's a nice concise (and honest) statement of Baby Boomer "slash and burn" economics and environmental policy. As a generation, most are quite prepared to spend as much money and consume as many resources as they can now, individually as consumers and collectively through government, without much consideration for the future.

In this respect, Gary Doer and his Finance minister Greg Selinger, with their $600 million deficit, were the Ultimate Hippies. Can you picture Canada's ambassador to the U.S. and Manitoba's present premier singing: "Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today . . ."

Interesting that you mention that book. Its a great example of the principle. I touched a little on that thinking in a previous blog at http://www.billogs.net/techdirt-free-is-not-socialism/
I will try to get that off iTunes - what a great deal and thanks for sharing.

I was reading your blog post, very interesting by the way. I know I shouldn't be doing this, but I read or listened to another book about new economic models based on the concept of Free. Its call Free: The Future Of A Radical Price by Chris Anderson. While the paper version costs money, I was able to get the audio book free on ITunes, as the author intended. I think their might even be a free E version of it. It goes to the point of how companies are learning to give away their products while still being a viable business company. Examples given are not only open source, but the premium model, where there is the free version, and then the premium model for X dollars (eg. Google Earth).

Just thought if you or your readers wanted to follow that thread of the argument, that book might be a good place to start.
